Capitol Events on Main: Box Office Throwbacks, Documentaries & Discussions, plus Winterfest Live 

The Warren County Public Library is happy to announce its slate of events taking place at the Capitol this month. From screen to stage, WCPL enjoys playing host to free entertainment and culturally-engaging opportunities throughout the year. Downtown Bowling Green is fortunate to have such a beautiful treasure, a historic building on Main Street that is still intact and operational.

Tuesday, February 6, 6pm visual artist & author Scott Erickson 

This multi-talented artist will perform his motivational one-man show, “Say Yes: A Liturgy of Not Giving Up On Yourself,” based on his latest book. During the show, he will guide audience members through and past what he calls a “very personal and universal conversation about the death of a dream and the overwhelming voice of Giving Up in our lives” with humor and insight. There are also a number of big-hit movies on the docket this month. Tickets are not required, but concessions will be for sale. Punxsutawney Phil Movie Marathon, Saturday, February 3, 12:30pm-6:15pm

We will host an all-day marathon of the hilarious movie starring Bill Murray, who relives the same day over and over again. Watch it once, or watch it again, again, and again! Rated: PG (1993)

12:30pm: Showtime 1

2:30pm: Showtime 2

4:30pm: Showtime 3

Midday Movie: Monday, February 5, 2pm-4pm

Midday movies are meant to be an inclusive experience designed for everyone to enjoy. A community social hour begins at 1pm, followed by previews, then the movie at 2pm. The film features a Manhattan sophisticate (Audrey Hepburn) who escorts wealthy men, taking extravagant gifts and money but not their affections. Rated: TV-G (1961) NOTE: A quiet room will be available upstairs for anyone needing a break during the show. 

‘80s Night Double Feature: Saturday February 24, 3pm-8pm

WCPL’s Teen Advisory Board is taking over the Capitol for an evening of ‘80s movie nostalgia to help fight off those winter blues. Whether you’re a teen now or are a Gen-Z teen-at-heart who wants to relive your glory days, come out for one or both of these great films:

3pm A high-school senior who takes along her suburban charges to rescue a friend stranded in Chicago experiences several babysitting mishaps along the way. Rated: PG-13 (1987)

6pm An eccentric scientist builds a time machine, which accidentally transports a high-school student back to the 1950s, where the teen inadvertently interferes with the budding romance between his future parents. The boy must figure out how to set things right, or risk completely altering the future. Rated: PG (1985)

The Capitol will also join with community partners to host these free documentary film screenings: 

WCPL and WKU Public Media present By Parties Unknown: Documentary Screening + Community Conversation, Thursday, February 1, 6pm-9pm

This documentary explores the story of the violent lynching of four black men in Russellville, Kentucky in 1908. It highlights the events and the cultural climate surrounding the lynching through the perspective of a community scholar who seeks to chronicle and share the story for present and future generations. A community conversation with the filmmaker and local experts will take place directly following the film at 7:45pm for those interested. WCPL, South Arts, and WKU PCAL present Butterfly in the Sky, Thursday, February 8, 6:30pm

An installment of the Southern Circuit Film series, Butterfly in the Sky tells the story of the beloved PBS children’s series “Reading Rainbow,” its iconic host LeVar Burton, and the challenges its creators faced in cultivating a love of reading through television.

Finally, the Capitol will again be the host site for WINTERFEST by Concerts in the Park. Live music will be featured every Friday night in February at 7pm (February 2, 9, 16, and 23). This series of concerts is suitable for all ages and is presented by Flora Templeton Stuart, the Downtown Redevelopment Authority, and the Warren County Public Library. Come downtown early to visit the fine restaurants and merchants in the area then chase away the winter blues with music, fun, and friends! Snacks, beer and wine will be available for purchase onsite. Doors to the lobby will open at 6pm and to the auditorium at 6:30pm. Ticket holders will be seated first.
