"More than One Kind of Derby"

May 2008 Editorial (page 4)

- by David Francis

May is Derby month in more ways than one. It’s the time of the big horse race of course and we have included many features relating to the Kentucky Derby. From front to back, our Meteorologist Tammy Garrison wrote about our chances for rain on Derby Day (page 5); Debbie Reid writes about her artwork which is featured on pages 6 &7 as well as the front cover; Ronnie Dreistadt from the Kentucky Derby Museum offers a brief history of the event (pages 14 & 15); Tammy Garrison chimes in again with interesting tidbits of horse related trivia on page 17; A Mint Julep recipe is offered in the Frugal Wine Snob article thanks to Micki’s on Main (page 38); Chef Mike describes a Derby favorite, the Hot Brown on page 40; Our Sports writer, Big Al Adams touches on the Derby on page 49; and our fashion section features a guest writer, Angie Schultz who knows everything about derby hats and how to wear them (page 50).

But wait, there’s another derby too! The BB&T Soap Box Derby is in May and the BG Area Convention and Visitors Bureau with the help of the BG Kiwanis share some pictures and describe the event (page 21). Speaking of the Visitors Bureau, they are one of our most recent sponsors. You will be able to read about the Bureau and area events each month in their own section of SOKY Happenings, just like the recently added SOKY cities: Bowling Green KY section.

You will also find all of the other sections of the magazine you have seen in the past. The Frugal Wine Snob returns with another frugal pick and the Garden Hoe, Nancy Derry has finally granted permission to start hoeing.

SOKY Happenings made another visit to the Center for Courageous Kids in Scottsville to attend their dedication and grand opening. They are open and have already had campers, some of which are seen on pages 18 & 19.

We are also proud to introduce the start of a new section: SOKY business. This section will be expanded as we are able. The May issue begins with an introduction to Paul Markle where he will be sharing his “dimensions of leadership.”

SOKY Happenings continues to grow! We added 8 more pages this month. Who would have thought that our first issue at 36 pages would grow to 60 pages by our 12th issue? We are so grateful to live is such a wonderful community with so many great people and events. We cannot begin to express our deep appreciation to our writers and contributors who really make SOKY Happenings what it has become.

This magazine is only financially possible because of the sponsors listed on the Sponsors page. These are the businesses that believe in SOKY, not just the magazine, but all who read it and all who live, work and play in South Central Kentucky. We may be putting the pages together, but it is the generosity of the sponsors who make it possible. Visit their businesses and thank them for their support.
