Beat winter blues at SoKY Marketplace Crop Shop

If the winter blues have gotten you down, come warm up and cheer up at the SoKY Marketplace Crop Shop. Just a short walk from the square, the Crop Shop, located in historic Taylor’s Chapel, is your one-stop shop for groceries and gifts. Not only can you shop without dealing with traffic outside of the downtown area, but you’re also supporting local farmers, business owners, and artists. If you aren’t familiar with the SoKY Marketplace Crop Shop, let us fill you in.

The bottom of historic Taylor’s Chapel houses the Crop Shop, a charming little store that sells local farmers’, local business owners’, and local artists’ goods. What you would normally find on Saturdays at the SoKY Marketplace Farmer’s Market you can access during the week. Operating hours are Tuesday-Thursday 3-6 p.m. and Saturdays 10 a.m.-2 p.m. In addition, it’s important to note that the Farmer’s Market is currently closed during the winter months but you can still shop for your favorites in the shop. The Crop Shop is stocked full of produce, meat, cheese, wine, tea, and coffee as well as canned goods like sundried tomatoes, jams and jellies, pickles, and maple syrup. Each week you have a chance to shop and eat local with the Crop Shop.

If those winter blues also have you feeling cabin fever, the Crop Shop has two fun, food-filled events this month. Join us Saturday, January 18 for a “Chili and Build Your Own Grilled Cheese” brunch. Enjoy fresh, homemade chili made right here in our commercial kitchen and pick from an array of fresh, locally sourced toppings for our in-house chef to cook you up a tasty grilled cheese. Then be sure to come back the next week, January 25 for our “Hot Wings Challenge” and “Mac and Cheese” cookoff. Participants in the Hot Wings Challenge will enjoy various hot sauces on hot wings, scaling up and increasing in heat and flavor. Participants in the Mac and Cheese challenge can submit their signature macaroni and cheese dish to a panel, where prizes will be given out in different categories. Spectators can sample the hot wings, hot sauces, and mac and cheese. To participate in either competition, email sokymarketplacemarketmanager@gmail.com.

January may be cold and dreary, but there’s always something local to purchase and cheer you or your loved ones up. Stop by the Crop Shop this week to purchase from a variety of high quality and handcrafted goods and don’t forget to attend both food themed events this month.
