WKU students “workin’ 9 to 5” on musical production

The tide’s gonna turn,” sings Doralee Rhodes in 9 to 5: The Musical.

With lyrics and music by Dolly Parton and originally authored by Patricia Resnick, 9 to 5: The Musical still holds relevance for women in the workplace. Their treatment in society in general reached a tipping point in 2017. Western Kentucky University’s Department of Theatre & Dance, along with the Department of Music, are bringing to the stage a topical look at how a previous generation dealt with sexual harassment. Based on the 1980 hit movie, 9 to 5: The Musical centers around three female coworkers who entertain wild fantasies about how to take revenge on their sexist, egotistical, lying, hypocritical bigot of a boss. An accidental poisoning propels the trio into a blackmail plot that gives them the upper hand and empowerment that proves beneficial for the entire office.

Deanna Oglesby, a WKU senior from Greenville, plays Judy, the newbie in the office.

“Judy is hilariously terrible at this office job she has somehow snatched, but she is determined, said Oglesby. “Through new friendships with Violet and Doralee, she also learns how freeing it is to not to be controlled by or be dependent on a man.”

9 to 5: The Musical is proudly sponsored by Service One Credit Union and runs April 6-8, 2018, in WKU’s historic Van Meter Auditorium. Show times are Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 3 p.m. Tickets are $18 for adults and $15 for WKU student and senior citizens.

Over 11,000 people were entertained by the WKU Department of Theatre & Dance last year. The department presents over 20 different productions every year including four Mainstage productions, two Mainstage dance concerts, three student-choreographed dance concerts, a Children’s Theatre Series, a Studio Series of student-directed words, and a Next Stage Series of showcases and works in progress.
