The best-dressed guest – Pappagallo

The invitations have arrived – baby showers, graduations, brunches, bridal showers, cocktail parties, rehearsal dinners, and weddings. You have checked “yes” on the RSVP card.

Next is the big question: “What should I wear?”

The invitation itself is your first guideline. Is it a traditional invitation, or a more casual, whimsical invite? Venue and time of day are also important clues. It may even tell you the type of attire. Some events even specify color palettes.

Formal weddings – specifies black tie

This is the one to pull out all the stops. Long gowns are expected, even tasteful sequins.

Evening jumpsuits or pantsuits are also acceptable. Look for flowy fabrics, pleated chiffon overlays to add drama.

You will also see black tie optional – short dressy cocktail dresses will work.

Semi-formal

This is more relaxed – same as you might wear to a cocktail party. You can be more bold – fringed dress, rosettes, off the shoulder, one-shoulder short dresses.

Pantsuits and jumpsuits are also an option.

Casual

Midi- or maxi-tiered dresses fit the bill here. Cotton floral prints scream spring. Matched short suits or dressier rompers are a fun option.

Please no jeans unless invitation tells you to wear jeans.

Venue is a big factor in your choices.

Church weddings or graduations call for more modest attire. You can wear a wrap or jacket for ceremony and then remove at reception or after-party.

Beach weddings need lighter weight fabrics and brighter colors. Also pay attention to shoes – no stilettos! Wedges or flat sandals are appropriate.

Be aware of weather at any outdoor venue – usually heat for summer events. Sheer cotton or organza are cooler.  Beware of satins and heavier garments.

Color

No white to a wedding still holds true. This is the bride’s special day to shine.

Black is acceptable, especially for formal weddings. You want to elevate your black dress with jewelry or fun details so you don’t look like a funeral.

Floral prints, pastel or bold, are beautiful for spring and summer.

You have been invited to participate in someone’s special day. You need to show up in your best attire to show you care. Here’s to spring soirées and shopping!
