WCPL Programs @ the Capitol: Festive free fun for family and friends!

This month, as you make plans with friends and family, make time to be together, enjoy traditions, create a few new ones, and let the public library assist! All the activities listed below take place at the Capitol and cost nothing other than the time it takes for you to reserve a ticket, if needed, and get here. In addition to getting to visit a beautiful, historic theater for free entertainment, you can stroll along the sidewalk in downtown Bowling Green. Take time to soak in the beauty of the lights on the square after the Downtown BGKY Lights Up event the first Friday of the month (12/1), guaranteed to put anyone in a happy holiday mood! Mark your calendars for the following:

WCPL Presents Music for the Solstice: A Celtic Celebration Live at the Capitol

Storytime with the Grinch: Friday, December 1, 4pm, 5pm Meet the Grinch, and hear the story of how he stole Christmas, right before the square officially lights up! Register each member of your party to let us know you’re coming at calendly.com/warrenplevents/storytime-with-the-grinch. (NOTE: The red and green lights below the marquee will be lit up by supporters of the “Light Up the Capitol” campaign, and it’s not too late to participate! Find out how at capitolbg.org/light.)

6th Annual Music for the Solstice – A Celtic Celebration: Thursday, December 21, 6pm We are thrilled to once again present an evening of Celtic music and lyrical readings featuring Rebecca Baumbach on fiddle, Skip Cleavinger on Irish pipes and tin whistle, plus special guests. Tickets are free and available at tinyurl.com/wintersolsticeconcert.

Holiday Double Feature: Friday, December 22

Slow down from the frenzy of holiday shopping and enjoy a free movie or two!

The Loveable Whoville Scrooge: Friday, December 22, 5pm Enjoy this lavish live-action version of the classic tale, starring Jim Carrey – in Oscar-winning makeup – as the coldhearted creature trying to thwart Whoville’s Yuletide celebration. (2000, Rated: PG) No ticket required.

Heartwarming Holiday Rom-Com: Friday, December 22, 7:30pm Set in London, this romantic comedy chronicles the affairs of several couples during Christmastime. The seemingly perfect wedding of Juliet and Peter brings many of the principals together, including heartsick best man Mark, who harbors a very unrequited crush on Juliet. There’s also recent widower Daniel, trying to help his lonely stepson, Sam, express his true feelings to a classmate. Across town, devoted working mother, Karen, tries to rekindle the passion of her husband. (2003, Rated: R) No ticket required.

Warming Movie Marathon: Tuesday, December 26, 8am-8pm Come in out of the cold and escape to beautiful warm places with a marathon of five epic adventure films featuring your favorite rugged heroes. Attendees can browse helpful information from local organizations and grab freebies from resource tables in the lobby as well as enjoy hot cocoa (pay what you can, or free if you can’t). Visit capitolbg.org to find out what’s playing! No tickets required.

Pete the Cat Pajama Party: Friday, December 29, 11am Enjoy an evening with Pete the Cat as he walks along and sings his song at a special Pajama Party at the Capitol! Come in your coziest, comfiest PJs to enjoy some of our favorite Pete the Cat stories. Stick around for a character meet and greet after the show! Tickets are free and available at calendly.com/warrenplevents/pete-the-cat-pajama-party

While you’re visiting the Capitol, you may notice some changes to our lobby layout. We recently identified some unused empty space that had been hidden behind a wall for many years, an elevator project that was never completed. Accessing it has allowed us to expand the concessions area, move the library collection, and add a ticket window, which will make purchases easier and more accessible. Depending on the progress, the project will be complete or mostly complete, so come in and take a look!

You’ll also want to spend some time browsing and shopping at Capitol Books, a lovely used book store located inside the building, which is open 10am until 4pm Monday through Friday (and occasionally during special library events). You’ll be surprised at the number of like-new books, puzzles, and DVDs that would make wonderful holiday gifts. The store is run by volunteers from the Friends of the Library – Warren County (aka the FOL), and proceeds go toward special library projects funded by the FOL.

Stay completely up-to-date about what’s happening at 416 East Main by signing up for the Capitol’s online newsletter (see link at capitolbg.org) and by following us on social media. Explore other ticketed events scheduled at our venue by visiting capitolbg.org/get-tickets.
