Library Spotlight: “Expedition Bigfoot” Expert & Winter Reading On Ice! @ WCPL

The excitement we have about upcoming library program offerings this month is just electric!

WCPL presents Dr. Mireya Mayor

If you are interested in or curious about cryptids or have ever watched Travel Channel’s hit series Expedition Bigfoot, then you will be thrilled to hear that the library is hosting a special event featuring one of its researchers, Dr. Mireya Mayor, at the Capitol Thursday, December 7, at 6pm. Free tickets are available for her presentation at warrenpl.org/events.

Those who attend will also have a chance to receive a free book! One hundred copies of her picture book Just Wild Enough, and one hundred copies of her biography Pink Boots and a Machete, have been purchased to give away, and those proceeds will help fund restoration projects in Madagascar.

Hailed by the New York Times as the “Female Indiana Jones,” Dr. Mayor is a modern-day explorer and world-renowned primatologist whose credentials are recognized worldwide. Her travels have led her to remote areas, where she searches for rare, difficult-to-find animals. During one of her journeys to Madagascar, she co-discovered the world’s smallest primate, a brand-new species to science!

Mayor has been a fixture on television and on the lecture circuit. As National Geographic’s first female wildlife correspondent, she has hosted dozens of documentaries, including her own Nat Geo Wild! Series called Wild Nights with Mireya Mayor and Mark Burnett’s Expedition Africa for the History Channel. Now in its fourth series, Expedition Bigfoot features Mayor and a team of researchers exploring the deep woods of Oregon for the elusive creature.

Exciting activities for the younger set will also abound this month as part of our Winter Reading Program! Snow Dome Storytimes at the Ice Rink return again this year and will be scheduled weekly on Thursday afternoons through the end of January. Attendees can choose from two sessions, one at 4:30pm and the other at 5pm. Sessions are free, but we ask that you register and let us know you are coming at warrenpl.org/events. If you plan to skate, tickets are required for that, and those prices can be found at www.warrencountyky.gov/soky-ice-rink. Come meet these popular characters who will be on hand the following dates:

•12/7: Snoopy

•12/14: Princesses

•12/21: The Grinch

•12/28: Paw Patrol’s Chase

•1/4: Scooby Doo

•1/11: Peppa Pig

•1/18: Pikachu

•1/25: Bluey & Bingo

The library began hosting free storytimes at the ice rink four years ago, added costumed characters to the mix three years ago, and brought the Snow Globe to the rink at the beginning of last year’s season. Now in its seventh year, the ice rink is managed by our friends and partners at Warren County Parks and Recreation, is sponsored this year by Wiesemann Orthodontic, and is located at SoKY Marketplace Pavilion, at the corner of 6th and Center.

In addition to special events at the ice rink, Winter Reading has a number of other fun components for both children and adults. To participate in the reading incentive program, just pick up a reading log at any library location or complete it online (available online at warrenpl.org/winter). Do so before January 31 to receive a camp mug, a coupon for a free book at Capitol Books, and a grand prize drawing entry. Logs can be completed by doing 10 activities that include any combination of the following:

•Read/listen to a book.

•Skate at SOKY Ice Rink.

•Watch a movie at The Capitol.

•Go to a storytime or library program.

•Check out a resource using an online database.

If you’d like to be notified of events on a regular basis, sign up for our online newsletter (see the link at the top of the home page: warrenpl.org) or follow us on social media (@warrencountypl on Facebook, Instagram, or X).

Finally, as a friendly reminder, all library locations will be closed during the holidays on these dates at the end of the month: December 24, 25, 26, & 31. Happy holidays, everyone!
