Far Off Broadway Players – A new version of Dracula comes to The Historic Plaza Theatre

Some of us prefer psychological thrillers like “Silence of the Lambs.” Others love a good science fiction horror movie like “Aliens.” But in the theatre world, we just can’t resist good old gothic horror like Bram Stoker’s “Dracula.” But in the case of the upcoming production of “Dracula” by the Far Off Broadway Players, it’s gothic horror, with a twist.

On October 19, 20 and 21, this classic tale hits the stage at the Plaza Theatre in Glasgow. This adaptation of “Dracula” stays pretty true to

the novel, but it is jam packed with fast paced drama, music and great acting. Think of it as a modern, graphic novel, rock and roll Dracula! Instead of a traditional gothic castle set complete with grand Victorian furniture, this set is simpler, with platforms and stylized lighting so that more focus can be centered on the characters. And the cast of Dracula has done a tremendous job bringing them to life!

The Far Off Broadway Players were fortunate to be given permission to perform this version written by playwright/screenwriter Mickey Fisher. Mickey a native of Ironton, Ohio, is a fantastic writer and most recently had success with a television show he created, “Reverie” that aired on NBC. He previously created the television series “Extant,” which starred Halle Berry and ran for two seasons on CBS. His version of “Dracula” was produced by Jenny Wiley Theatre in Pikeville, Ky., and they graciously granted the Far Off Broadway Players the rights to produce it right here in South Central Kentucky.

As usual, we are blessed with a cast of talented, local actors from all walks of life. These are people just like you who absolutely love taking part in theatrical productions. Playing the pivotal role of Count Dracula is frequent Far Off Broadway Players actor Nick Swayne. Nick, a local firefighter, has played many roles over the years. Most recently he portrayed Felix Ungar in the February production of “The Odd Couple” by Neil Simon. Also in the cast are Allen Hogan as Jonathan Harker, Chris Bartley as Abraham Van Helsing, Leah White as Lucy Westenra, Kaity Martin as Mina Murray-Harker, Brian Reed as Dr. John Seward, Nick Hudson as Arthur Holmwood, Tracy Martin as Bride of Dracula, Jeff Moore as Renfield, Carla Bush as Bride of Dracula and Sister Agatha, Dustin Popp as Quincy Morris, Alaura Keen as Bride of Dracula and Carla Gantt as Bride of Dracula. The production is being directed by Artistic Director Paul Glodfelter and stage managed by Peggy Goodman who’s also the set designer, property mistress and costume designer.

Unlike many stage versions of gothic horror classics, this is a fast-paced, electrifying, intriguing and rocking good time! You won’t want to              miss the Far Off Broadway Player’s production of Bram Stoker’s “Dracula” adapted for the stage by Mickey Fisher.
