Muttley’s – an ingenious concept born of service

Hi, my name is Joe B. Bettersworth and this is the journey I took on the way to Muttley’s.

First off, I was born and raised in the auction industry, which is solely a service industry. No product, just service! When we sold it, it became America’s Auto Auction and we opened Bettersworth Motors next to Leachman on Scottsville Road.

It was during my years at the auction that I developed a service-oriented approach to business. “Service Is All We Have To Sell” was posted on a sign just inside our sales arena. Providing excellent service at a reasonable price point seemed to be a recipe for success and we easily transferred that philosophy to our dealership. Bettersworth Motors opened in January 2004 and after selling quality pre-owned autos for 15 years, we closed the doors for good in September 2019. Now what was I going to do? Well, I began doing windshield repair, going dealership to dealership repairing their used car inventory. Things were going great for about six months until… can anyone guess.. March of 2020 was upon us!

Unable to do any service work at the dealerships because of COVID, I found myself once again looking for a way to make a living! This wasn’t easily done considering you could barely leave the house to go to the store, so I found myself doing a lot of home improvement projects, among these projects was washing the dog more than once over the winter! That is when I really realized what a love-hate relationship I had with the whole process of washing the dog. I absolutely love it once she has had her bath and is so soft and smells nice, it just makes it easier to snuggle with her and give her the attention she deserves. I’m pretty sure she liked that part, too, but we both hated everything it took to get to that point… and that is when I thought there had to be a better way!

I also started guessing there must be more people in Bowling Green who felt the same way – after all, getting an appointment with a groomer is a two-month wait and dropping them off for a simple wash could be almost as expensive. That is when the concept of Muttley’s was born – it’s not unlike a self-service car wash, which I was very familiar with, only for your dog! I provide everything you need to give your fur baby a bath that is hassle-free for you!

Muttley’s is equipped with eight stainless walk-in tubs with carpeted ramps that make it easy for even elderly dogs to access! Once in the tub, your furry friend is waist-high, so no more getting down on your knees and bending over the edge of the bathtub. There is also the advantage of being able to stay with your pup for the entire experience rather than dropping them off with a stranger. I believe this ensures a calm and enjoyable visit for both you and them. Best of all, once you’re finished getting them all clean, you don’t have to worry about cleaning up all the mess in your own bathroom. The overall ease of the entire process makes it a great spa day for you and your pup to enjoy together and it won’t break the bank, either!

I do offer a variety of shampoos and conditioners along with towels and dryers. If you would like to use my product and towels I only charge $12.99 – if you have a favorite shampoo and would like to bring your own towels it’s only $10.99! I very much pride myself on keeping Muttley’sclean and providing my customers with any help they may need while bathing their fur babies.

And that is the story of my journey: If people don’t call you crazy when you start something new, you just weren’t thinking big enough!
