It’s a horse’s world

It’s a beautiful morning in May. I’ve just finished feeding and watering the horses and have come up to the house to write the June article for SOKY Happenings. Being on a farm surrounded by animals is an amazing experience. Will Rogers said, “There is something about the outside of a horse that’s good for the inside of a man” (or woman). The world certainly has its share of problems these days and we all need to find activities that make us feel fulfilled and hopeful for a brighter tomorrow. I, for one, love being outdoors, working hard and feeling useful.

Our fencing project is almost complete. It’s been a long process as we contend with rain, i.e. MUD. MUD. MUD. I have agreed to take in three more horses, two blind, one sighted, and so must keep putting off their arrival until the new paddocks are complete. One of the horses will be here this coming week. Poor thing, he’s totally blind and was “dropped off” at an abandoned coal mine in Eastern Kentucky. Left to fend for himself, no food nor water. Just imagine what he thought. And so he’s coming to live at Rainhill. I’m happy I could help!

Rainhill received an amazing donation recently. Carrots! A lot of carrots! Country Oven Bakery donated 750 pounds of fresh carrots that were left over from meals that they prepare for Kroger. The horses were thrilled as they got carrots for breakfast and dinner and snack time. It was a kind and generous donation that we won’t ever forget. Feeding so many horses is an unbelievable undertaking, one that doesn’t allow for many treats like carrots or apples, so this donation was especially wonderful. Many, many thanks, Country Oven!

As our family of horses continues to grow, so does the need for hay and grain. Please, if you can help, we would appreciate it more than words can express. Even the smallest amount helps lighten our load and allows us to do this important work.

There are many ways to help. Donations are possible thru PayPal, by check, gift cards to Lowe’s, Stockdale’s, TSC, and Southern States where we purchase our grain. You can call them at 270-843-1146. Just tell them it’s for Rainhill and they will put it on our account.

Thanks for everything. Bless you all for caring.
