Moving Matters – A lifetime of memories: Cleaning out a loved one’s home

Cleaning out a loved one’s home after a death or a move can be taxing emotionally, physically and financially. Often families live away and may have limited time or resources to take care of this important task. Imagine the cleanout of a parent’s home they had lived in for over 50 years. Where to start? What to do with all the stuff? These are only some concerns. According to a House Cleanout Calculator, a 3,000 sq. ft. house could easily take more than 200 man-hours to clean out from start to finish!

MOVING MATTERS, LLC, a locally owned business since 2009 can help. While we specialize in senior rightsizing and relocation, our services include cleaning out a loved one’s home.

Kathryn Oliver, owner of MOVING MATTERS, uses her experience from cleaning out her mother’s home and others to help families with this difficult undertaking.

LESSONS LEARNED:

  1. Change locks.
  2. Look for financial and legal documents.
  3. Inventory contents of home & make a plan.
  4. Touch everything and don’t be in a hurry!
  5. Look for valuables and money!

We found a ring in a zipper pocket of a purse!! It appraised for $5,000!!! What if we had donated the clothes without checking pockets, etc.??? We also found money tucked between tax returns that were going to be shredded!

*NOTE: attics, garages and basements often hold valuables.

 6. Get help selling household items and cleaning out attics, etc.

It took us longer than expected!!!!

MOVING MATTERS offers a customized cleanout plan and a variety of services to facilitate a thorough, efficient and timely cleanout. We work with families as well as estate attorneys.

This requires careful documentation of dispersal and disposal of possessions, donation, shredding, sorting and other services requested by client. Kathryn plans, coordinates, manages and is the point of contact for client and other third parties.

WE UNDERSTAND. WE HAVE EXPERIENCE. WE CAN HELP!
