What to look for in a gym

submitted by Bowling Green Athletic Club

The start of the New Year is always a popular time for setting goals, and as most everyone knows, planning to get healthier and in better shape is one of the top commitments people set out to accomplish. Unfortunately, many give up on this goal short of even making a dent. Apart from holding yourself accountable, it is important to choose a gym that tailors to your needs so you can eliminate the excuses and finally make a change in your habits. Choosing the right facility for you can be easy if you focus on these four qualities below.

  1. Accessibility

Obviously, it has to be open during the hours you plan on working out. We also recommend that it be close to your home or work so being too far out of the way is never an excuse. BAC offers access to two great facilities on opposite sides of town so whether you’re shopping on Scottsville Road or on your way home you can stop in for a workout.

  1. Equipment Needs

Honestly, if you only want to walk on a treadmill for your exercise you’re better off purchasing the equipment yourself. Cardio can be a great workout, but if it’s done alone it will not often produce the intended results. Incorporating resistance and weight training will not only make you stronger but will also increase your bone density and burn more calories, even when you aren’t working out. Look for a gym that incorporates every aspect of fitness. This should include opportunities to work on your flexibility and balance, strength, cardiovascular endurance and agility. This will give you the tools you need to build a well-rounded workout routine.

  1. Added Features

Choose a gym that offers amenities to keep you involved like group fitness classes offered any time of the day, education classes, and basketball courts. These options will give you variety when things become mundane in your workout program. Our Cardio Theater is a top recommendation for those members that struggle getting in enough cardio. You almost forget you’re working out because your brain is distracted from the movie playing.

  1. Positive Vibes

Surround yourself with a positive environment that’ll inspire you to push through the tough times. BAC has a staff full of upbeat and positive people, from the workers in child care to the numerous group fitness Instructors. We’re all here to help you reach your goals.

Overall it’s about becoming a healthier, better version of you. Take this year as a chance to accomplish something for YOU!
