What It Means To Me To Be An American As We Celebrate 250 Years of Freedom

As we celebrate America’s 250th anniversary, note… America is turning 250… not me… I find myself thinking about what it truly means to be an American – not in the abstract, but right here in South Central Kentucky.

J. C. Kirby & Son Funeral Chapels wish you a safe and happy 4th of July!

For a quarter of a millennium, this country has been shaped by ordinary people who believed in possibility and often accomplished extraordinary things. And when I look around our region – from Bowling Green to Franklin, Scottsville to Glasgow and every great community in between – I see that same spirit alive and well. It shows up in the way we support local businesses, cheer for our kids on Friday nights, rebuild after storms, and welcome new families and businesses who join us in calling this great place home.

Being an American here isn’t about grand gestures. It’s about the everyday acts of kindness and resilience that define us. It’s the neighbor who checks in after a surprise storm. The volunteer who shows up early and stays late. The veteran who stands a little taller and salutes when the anthem plays. The families and friends who gather to celebrate the Fourth of July with food, laughter and gratitude.

At 250 years, our nation is still growing, still learning, still striving to live up to its promise. And as Kentuckians we understand that work. We’ve weathered challenges, embraced change and held tight to the values that make this region special.

We are also part of a beautifully diverse American story. Our restaurants, festivals and neighborhoods reflect cultures from around the world, each adding something new to the fabric of our community. That diversity doesn’t divide us – it enriches us. It reminds us that America has always been at its best when it welcomes new voices and new dreams.

As we mark this historic milestone, I’m reminded that the American story is written in places like ours – in the choices we make, the people we lift up, and the hope we carry forward. The next 250 years will be shaped by communities just like South Central Kentucky, where pride runs deep and opportunities abound.

At SOKY Happenings we are extremely proud to be a part of this journey and join with you in helping keep the spirit of America alive in the everyday moments that matter most, many of which are recorded in our monthly pages.

Here’s to our past, our present, and the many wonderful events and stories that still lie ahead.
