Spring Twilight Tours at Hobson House

“As a young child in November of 1939, my parents were on a trip, and I went to stay with my grandparents for a while. In those days [at Riverview], there was no central heat, electricity, or indoor bathrooms. I was never uncomfortable there. There were coal fires, kerosene lamps, and water warmed on the stove in the kitchen and brought up to our bedrooms. To me it seemed very special, a little scary, and really splendid all at the same time.”

–George Anna Duncan McKenzie, great-granddaughter of Atwood and Julia Hobson

There is something magical about exploring the old Hobson House by the light of antique lamps and candles. It is so much easier to imagine Atwood and Julia Hobson’s family living here and experience the house much as Mrs. McKenzie did when she first arrived as a child. And we invite you to do just that this Spring!

During the pandemic, it was with great sadness that we had to cancel our free annual Christmas Candlelight Tours. For many of our staff and volunteers, it is our favorite event of the year and we look forward to bringing it back this December. In the meantime, as a special treat for our 50th Anniversary, we invite you to be our guest for a free Twilight Tour of the mansion on Saturday, May 14, 4:30pm-7:30pm. If you are not able to visit during our regular hours, this is an excellent opportunity to bring the entire family for a free introduction to Riverview. Docents will be stationed in each room to share stories of the Hobson family and early Bowling Green.

As Riverview at Hobson Grove celebrates its Golden Anniversary in 2022, we are so excited to share its treasures with you throughout the year. One of its greatest treasures can be found on the main floor in the front and back parlors. Our historic 1872 plaster parlor ceilings have recently been restored to their 19th century grandeur. By uncovering original decoration and using period photographs, our historic restoration artist has returned the ceilings to their former glory. The Spring Twilight Tour will allow you to appreciate these beautiful works of art much as the Hobson family did 150 years ago. Join us!

Follow us on social media to stay up-to-date on the latest events and join us in our mission to preserve and share Bowling Green’s only historic house museum.
