The variety of talent that has graced The Capitol stage over the years is definitely noteworthy. From bluegrass and indie to country and rock, the variety of musical performances has run the gamut! Showcasing regional and local musicians is a great perk of being a community performance venue, and WCPL’s ability to make attendance affordable (and often free), makes this historic downtown venue all the more accessible! We are quite excited about this month’s offerings (along with the free movies taking place all month long), and we hope that you will be, too!
Experience the Spizzwinks of Yale University, Monday, March 16 at 7pm: Noted as being the “world’s oldest underclassman a cappella group,” the high-energy Spizzwinks have entertained audiences since 1914, releasing several dozen albums since its inception and regularly travelling worldwide. Using only their voices, this world-class group performs songs ranging from contemporary pop to well-loved classics. Their tight-knit harmonies cover a wide variety of genres, and their presentations incorporate humor, skits, and choreography to keep audiences engaged and entertained. In addition to having a YouTube channel, their music can be found on Spotify, Apple Music, and Amazon Music. In addition to travelling internationally, the group also makes an effort to perform in each of the singers’ respective hometowns. We are delighted to welcome back to town student vocalist Nate Stein, class of 2028, who hails from Bowling Green and is one of the group’s tenor singers. Performance tickets cost only $5 (plus fees) and are available for pre-purchase through the Capitol’s website (capitolbg.org/events) or at the door.
Celebrate Singers & Songwriters at The Capitol, Thursday, March 19 at 7pm: The Capitol will host Singer-Songwriter Night for local and regional singers and songwriters, showcasing a variety of talented musicians from the area. Hosted in collaboration with the artists, the evening’s event will feature the musical talents of Gonzo Eldritch, Hugh Trimble, Léa Schenk, and Despite. Eldritch is an indie music artist known for albums such as Running from a Dream (2023), Still Too (2019), and Noise (2018). Trimble is a folk artist who got his start busking in New York’s Central Park and has most recently released a self-titled LP with The Atomic Ranch Band, with whom he has toured. WKU grad Léa Schenk’s songwriting journey started during a study abroad semester, when she was invited to write lyrics for a local band in south France. Since then, she’s combined her love of music, poetry, and theater to hone her craft. The band Despite, while typically performing as a rock trio, will play this event as a duo and feature the musical talents of Ellie Sandlin and Abby Yarbrough.
