Outstanding volunteers were honored on April 27 during the 34th Annual Volunteers of the Year Awards at Bob Kirby Library, sponsored by Franklin Bank & Trust, WNKY News 40, American Legion Post 23, BGMU, and Drakes Creek Middle School Youth Services Center. Now in its 34th year, the Volunteers of the Year Awards shine a spotlight on the unsung heroes whose selfless contributions strengthen our community every day.
Anne Grubbs Spirit of Service Award: Susan Harmon
This award recognizes individuals who excel in quality, length, and spirit of service to others.
For nearly 15 years, Susan has been a cornerstone of Toys for Tots in Warren County, serving as the Telephone Coordinator. She manages the call-in system that helps over 1,000 families receive Christmas assistance each year, organizing 70+ volunteer hours weekly during the busy season. Susan also maintains detailed records to prevent service duplication and assists in shopping, sorting, and distributing toys. Her leadership and hundreds of volunteer hours annually have helped bring holiday joy to more than 14,000 children in 2024 alone. Her unwavering commitment makes her indispensable to the program’s success.
Team Spirit Award: Bluegrass Supply Chain Services
This award recognizes those groups that work together to provide volunteer service in the community.
Bluegrass Supply Chain Services exemplifies the Team Spirit Award through its outstanding community involvement. As the only business partner among Saturday Meals’ 14 supporting groups, their team, especially volunteers like Nissy and Kim, consistently goes beyond expectations, including personal time spent delivering meals. Their vital support during the holidays includes funding, supplies, and hands-on help. They also give back through other efforts like Hope House’s Affordable Christmas and the Kosair Kids Holiday Party. Their actions reflect a true culture of service and set a powerful example of corporate responsibility in action.
Rising Star Award: Arrington Richer
This award recognizes an individual or team who is new to volunteering and gaining momentum with your organization.
Arrington’s passion for animal welfare sparked a movement in Allen County. What started as weekly volunteering at the shelter in early 2024 quickly evolved into founding Friends of Allen County Animal Shelter, a nonprofit that organizes adoption events, fundraisers, and outreach. Her work has significantly boosted adoptions and community awareness. She’s now establishing a spay and neuter fund to expand its impact even further. Through leadership and heart, Arrington has transformed the shelter and inspired lasting change.
Young Leader Award: Louanna Boblett
This award recognizes an individual or team who is 18 years old or younger, providing volunteer service in the community.
Louanna has been instrumental in growing Toys for Tots through her work with the Navy JROTC in Russell County. Over three years, she has led toy drives, built business partnerships, and managed media outreach. Her efforts include organizing family shopping experiences, arranging childcare, and expanding toy distribution to local daycares, Head Start programs, and nursing homes. Her leadership and dedication have left a meaningful mark on the community.
