I’ve written about this before, but here’s a reminder: Twila and I deliver nearly all the copies of SOKY Happenings every month. There are over 100 locations in Bowling Green/Warren County, plus the surrounding counties of Allen, Barren, Butler, Logan, and Simpson. And since we don’t have a Star Trek transporter, somebody has to load up a vehicle and visit all those locations to drop off a few magazines or a few bundles.
Our printer delivers SOKY in bundles each weighing around 12 pounds. Anytime I can carry all the bundles into a location in one trip, I like to do it – which sometimes means hauling 50 or 60 pounds of magazines. It’s always nice to see how often people stop to hold the door for me or even turn around and come back just to help.
If you follow this column, you know that a few months ago Twila had a very difficult hip replacement surgery. She was non-weightbearing for three months. But if you know Twila, you know that as soon as the surgical team allowed her to use a walker, she was out and about trying to help with SOKY deliveries.
Because the magazine is still so popular, we often have to go back to locations and refill the racks. Without my knowledge, my beautiful – and somewhat hard-headed – partner took some magazines with her and stopped by a normally busy location the other day. Picture this: here’s this beautiful lady walking toward the entrance of a busy store, using a walker because she can’t put weight on her left leg, and in each hand she’s carrying a 12-pound bundle of magazines because the SOKY rack was nearly empty.
As she approached the door, she noticed a group of guys sitting at a table inside chatting. As soon as one of them saw her, he jumped up, came outside, took the magazines from her, carried them to the rack, and held the door for her as well. I wish I had this gentleman’s name, but Twila simply thanked him profusely for his kindness and went on her way while he returned to his friends.
The bottom line is this: we are blessed to live in a part of the country where it is still normal to run into nice, caring, helpful people every day. I’ll go as far as saying those folks are still the norm – not the exception.
It’s Thanksgiving month. What better time to be nice to someone and to be thankful for where we live and the people who share this community with us. Happy Thanksgiving from the entire SOKY Happenings team!
