The Capitol: A place to gather, experience, and enjoy!

For many decades, the Capitol has been an amazing facility, and it’s a historic venue for sure, but in recent years it has become so much more! It currently serves – as it has since its inception – as a movie theater and music venue, but now it is also a library space and stage for a host of local, regional and national live productions! It’s a place where community members and out-of-town visitors can gather with other film lovers, live theater enthusiasts, concert goers, and library patrons. With both free and ticketed events, the Capitol is a place for folks of all ages, from all walks of life, with a variety of artistic tastes. Here’s a highlight of what we have planned for August:

The Capitol presents The Room

Mid-month’s Capitol Nights: Stories and Songs:

A newly formed entity, Capitol Row Entertainment, is an events and experiences company based in Bowling Green that will present a second Capitol Nights: Stories and Songs production Thursday, August 14, at 7pm at the Capitol (416 East Main). The group’s founders, Spence Sheldon, Patrick Reynolds, and Chris “Booba” Young, have worked once again to bring an intimate, narrative concert experience to downtown’s iconic downtown stage. According to Sheldon, “The first show [in April] was a remarkable success! However, because of the artist and writers’ availability… what was supposed to be the flagship show is coming second.”

The mid-August show will feature local and nearby singer-songwriters including Jackie Lee, Dallas Wilson, Logan Turner, and Jared Mullins. As an example of the group’s many accolades, Morgan Wallen (dubbed by Billboard as “one of the biggest stars in the music world right now”) signed Jared Mullins as the first writer for his publishing company, Wilder Music. Dallas Wilson, a country and pop music songwriter and producer, has written three #1 country radio hits. Songwriter and producer Logan Turner has amassed over 50 million streams during his time with his former band Bexar, and also toured with Keith Urban, Jelly Roll and Niko Moon. Jackie Lee was initially famous for his debut single, “She Does,” which rose to a top fifty position on Billboard’s U.S.Country airplay chart. Find out more about the artists on Instagram (@jackieleemusic | @loganlturner | @jadedmuffins@dallaswilson8).

With plans in the work for this to become a regular series, Sheldon has high hopes. “It’s going to be something you and your family come to every time, with writers you have seen before and will hopefully develop a life-long relationship with, as well as with new writers and artists, who will give you a completely different experience than the last.” Attendees can sign up for a VIP experience ticket for early access to the sound check (5pm), a pre-show meet & greet, access to a VIP lounge, and a free t-shirt. That option, as well as general admission tickets, can be purchased at capitolbg.org

Teen Advisory Board Activities

On the library activities front, the Teen Advisory Board (TAB) will be launching into the school year with a brand new organization for to students in middle school, junior high, and high school! Beginning next month, it will alternate meeting at the Capitol (every second Thursday) and the Bob Kirby Branch Library (every fourth Thursday). During the 2025-26 school year, the TAB will meet regularly, but teens are invited to apply now! A TAB applicant must be passionate about library services and committed to helping plan or volunteer for special teen events and programs. Anyone between the ages of 13 and 18 interested in joining TAB can apply online or get more information by emailing its organizers: Sam (samt@warrenpl.org) or Ella (ellah@warrenpl.org). Both staff members will be available to visit in person at Molotov Skate Shop Saturday, August 5, where they will be sharing information about the group and possible plans.

The Movie, The Room, and Greg Sestro’s Memoir Disaster Artist

Visit the Capitol to watch the 2017 biographical comedy/drama starring brothers James and Dave Franco who, along with Seth Rogan, tell the true-life story of weirdo auteur Tommy Wiseau. After befriending struggling actor Greg Sestero, together they make a movie called The Room, which soon becomes a cult hit due to its staggering badness. The movie will be presented twice on these dates:

•Wednesday, August 13, at 6:30pm

•Friday, August 15, at 7pm

The movies are being shown in anticipation of an exciting, special ticketed event Saturday, August 16, at 7pm that will include the showing of The Room – the cult-classic that inspired the abovementioned movie – as well feature a meet and greet/book signing with actor Greg Sestero himself! The Room has been captivating audiences for over 20 years this event is sure to be one for the books! Copies of Sestero’s memoir The Disaster Artist will be for sale at both free movie showings as well as this evening. Tickets can be purchased at capitolbg.org/events
