On Sunday, September 14, hundreds will gather at the Bowling Green Hot Rod Stadium not just to walk, but to send a powerful message – hope is stronger than silence.
The 14th Annual Out of the Darkness Walk, sponsored by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP), invites individuals and families to come together in support of mental health awareness and suicide prevention. For many, it’s a day of reflection, connection, and healing.
The event honors those we’ve lost, lifts up those who are struggling, and empowers communities to take action. Whether you’re walking in memory of a loved one, supporting someone who battles with mental health, or simply showing up to say, “You are not alone,” your presence matters.
A Mission of Hope
The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention is the nation’s leading nonprofit dedicated to preventing suicide. With chapters in every state, AFSP’s work reaches far and wide, but it’s their presence in local communities – like Bowling Green – that makes the deepest impact.
AFSP’s mission is simple yet profound:
To save lives and bring hope.
They achieve this through:
•Evidence-based research that deepens our understanding of suicide and how to prevent it
•Public education that reduces stigma and empowers communities to act
•Legislative advocacy that drives meaningful mental health policy change
•Support programs that offer healing and guidance for those impacted by suicide
A Walk With Purpose
Last year’s walk welcomed over 400 participants and received media attention. This year’s event is expected to grow even more, continuing to shine a light on a topic that affects so many, yet is often kept in the shadows.
“This isn’t just a fundraiser – it’s a place to be seen, heard, and supported,” says Katelyn Simpson, Walk Chair for the Bowling Green event. “Every person who walks, donates, or shares their story is helping to build a future where no one feels like suicide is their only option.”
How You Can Join
The walk is open to everyone – individuals, families, workplaces, schools, and teams. Registration is free, and fundraising is encouraged but not required. All proceeds go directly to AFSP’s mission-driven programs and research.
