This spring, a well-loved neighborhood of Bowling Green becomes again a celebration of creativity when the White Squirrel Arts Fest brings artists, performers, and makers together in the Historic Shake Rag District. On April 25, this vibrant neighborhood once again becomes the backdrop for a full day of art, music, food, and family-friendly fun.
Spread throughout the streets and gathering spaces of the Shake Rag District and White Squirrel Brewery, the festival celebrates art in all its forms – traditional and unexpected alike. Visitors can explore visual arts, music, fashion, literature, spoken word, and more – all in a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere that invites the entire community to take part. Best of all, the festival is free and open to the public, making it easy for families, friends, and curious visitors to wander in and see what they discover.
One of the biggest draws of the festival is the Arts Fair, where artists and makers from Bowling Green and across the region set up booths to share and sell their work. As visitors stroll through vendor booths, they’ll find everything from original paintings and prints to ceramics, jewelry, glasswork, paper art, and handmade goods. Expect a variety of price points as many of the pieces are one-of-a-kind. Published authors will be on hand with their books, and many artists enjoy chatting with guests about their creative process and the stories behind their work.
Of course, all that exploring tends to build up an appetite – and the festival has that covered, too. A lineup of food trucks and vendors will be serving up crowd favorites throughout the day. Whether you’re in the mood for burgers hot off the grill, smoky barbecue, sweet treats, or something in between, there will be plenty of options to keep festival-goers fueled as they browse, listen, and explore.
Music will also fill the district throughout the day, with live performances providing the perfect soundtrack for a spring afternoon outdoors. Local and regional musicians will take the stage with a variety of styles and sounds, creating a lively backdrop as visitors move between art booths, grab a bite to eat, or simply relax and enjoy the festival atmosphere.
The creativity doesn’t stop there. One of the festival’s most anticipated moments is the fashion show, where wearable art takes center stage. Featuring original designs by student creators from WKU, the show highlights the imagination and craftsmanship behind fashion as an art form. Expect bold ideas, inventive designs, and plenty of personality as models take the runway in pieces that blend creativity with style.
As the sun begins to set, the energy shifts from the runway to the microphone during the festival’s Poetry Slam at Shake Rag Bar & Lounge. This high-energy event invites poets and spoken word artists to take the stage and share their voices in hopes of leaving with one of the cash prizes sponsored by Shake Rag Bar & Lounge. Some performers are seasoned veterans of the slam scene, while others are stepping up to the mic for the first time – but the result is always an unforgettable evening of storytelling, humor, honesty, and powerful expression.
While the performances and exhibits are a major part of the draw, the heart of the White Squirrel Arts Fest is the sense of community it creates. Families can spend the day discovering new artists, kids can experience creative activities, and neighbors can gather to enjoy great music and good food. It’s the kind of event where visitors might arrive planning to stay for an hour and end up lingering for most of the day.
For the organizers and volunteers behind the event, the mission is simple: celebrate the incredible creativity that already exists in Bowling Green while creating a space where artists and the community can connect. Whether visitors come to shop for original artwork, hear a favorite band, sample food truck favorites, cheer on a poet, or simply enjoy a spring afternoon outdoors with family and friends, the festival offers something for everyone.
