September is a fabulous month for so many reasons. Our two favorites (in addition to the promise of cooler weather) are that: (1) it’s National Library Card Sign-Up Month; (2) it’s time for the annual Used Book Sale hosted by the Friends of the Library!
Get a Library Card; Snag Collectible Stickers!
Library Card Sign-Up Month is the ideal time to remind those who don’t yet have a library card that getting one is super easy and absolutely free! A Warren County Public Library card is your ticket to an incredible amount of free access – from books, magazines, movies, and music to loads of valuable online content – and applying takes no time at all. As this year’s theme puts it, a library card hits ALL the right notes!
To celebrate, we’re giving away a limited number of custom WCPL location stickers and “I ♥️ my library” stickers to those who apply for a card AND to anyone who wants one! Collect all location stickers by visiting the Lisa Rice Library, Bob Kirby Branch, Smiths Grove Branch, Buchanon Park Branch, and the Capitol!
Shop at the FOL Used Book Sale; Support the Library!
WCPL has been supported by many community members and volunteers through the years, even since its early days when it lacked consistent funding. In 1988, a group of enthusiastic supporters established a local Friends of the Library organization (aka FOL), solidifying its commitment to the library and creating a foundation for future efforts to fund special projects outside of its regular budget. Since that time, many individuals have come together to serve as Friends and advocates, contributing countless hours toward volunteer and fundraising efforts. The organization’s major fundraiser since its inception has been an annual used book sale, which the public looks forward to year after year, and this year’s is scheduled for September 17 through 20!
The sale featuring treasures and bargains galore will take place in the meeting rooms at the Bob Kirby Branch Library, located at 175 Iron Skillet Court, on the following days:
•Thursday, September 17 (members-only preview night) 4pm-8pm
•Friday, September 18: 9am-5pm
•Saturday, September 19: 9am-5pm
•Sunday, September 20 (bag day): 1pm-2pm (members-only hour); 2pm-5pm (open to all)
FOL membership registration will be available on-site Thursday evening and throughout the sale. In addition to used books (many like new), the sale will also include audiobooks, DVD movies, music CDs, LPs, teacher resources, and some sheet music. You can even snag a canvas FOL book bag (while supplies last)! Many thanks to those who have donated items throughout the year for the sale. Keep in mind that to provide enough time for sale setup and takedown, there will be a pause in the library’s being able to accept donations from September 6 through September 21.
Mark Your Early October Calendar; Meet a Celebrity Athlete & Author!
We are stoked about this announcement – so grab your calendar now and make a note! We’re thrilled to announce that WCPL will host an event with former New England Patriots’ player Malcolm Mitchell early next month (Saturday, October 3, at 11am). In addition to being a top-level athlete who helped his team win the Super Bowl, Mitchell is a speaker, author, and literacy champion. In 2016, he established the Share the Magic Foundation, which has served over 3.7 million children with the goal of improving literacy in underserved communities. He has also written four children’s books, and prior to his presentation at The Capitol, we will give away free copies of his newest one, My Super Duper Me, to the first 200 in attendance. Geared toward kids ages four to eight, the book’s positive message about reading makes it a great addition to any child’s home library! Don’t miss this unique opportunity to meet Mitchell and be inspired!
Library activities and special events take place throughout the year, and to make sure you’re on the cutting edge of knowing what’s happening next, be sure to sign up for our email newsletter (https://tinyurl.com/WCPLNews). You can follow us on Facebook, Instagram, and Threads, as well, and check out our event lineup at warrenpl.org/calendar.
