As we celebrate Independence Day and enjoy time outdoors with family and friends, don’t forget about the birds sharing our backyards. Summer brings hot temperatures, and birds have an increasing need for fresh water to drink and bathe in. Bathing helps birds keep their feathers clean, regulate their body temperature, and stay in good condition for flight. A reliable water source can even attract species that may never visit a feeder. Fresh water becomes especially important during periods of summer heat when natural sources may become scarce. For even greater success, consider adding moving water to your bird bath. Birds are naturally attracted to the sight and sound of moving water, making fountains, wigglers, and misters excellent ways to draw in more visitors. Water movement also helps discourage mosquito breeding and can keep water fresher between cleanings. Copper bird bath disks can also help slow the growth of algae, helping to keep the water cleaner between regular maintenance. Whether placed on a pedestal, hung from a hook, or set at ground level, a bird bath can provide a welcome oasis for birds throughout the summer months.
