A Smithsonian Experience in Greenville

This fall, Greenville is honored to welcome Americans, a Smithsonian Institution traveling exhibition, to Thistle Cottage. From October 4 through November 15, visitors can explore how American Indians have shaped, influenced, and contributed to our nation’s history, both locally and on a national scale.

Far more than a traditional exhibit, Americans is part of Museum on Main Street, a program that brings world-class Smithsonian experiences to small communities across the country. It is the product of a partnership between the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service (SITES), state humanities councils, and local host institutions like Thistle Cottage. This collaboration ensures that important conversations and educational opportunities happen not just in major cities but in towns like Greenville, making culture accessible to all.

Walking through the exhibition, you’ll discover how Native history and stories are not confined to the past but remain woven into the fabric of everyday life. From place names to sports mascots to pop culture references, Americans invites visitors to reflect on the presence and influence of Native Americans throughout the centuries. For Greenville, hosting the exhibition is both an honor and an opportunity: a chance for residents and guests alike to see their community as part of a much larger national conversation.

Greenville Merchants Christmas Open House

As the Smithsonian exhibition prepares to close on November 15th, Greenville transitions seamlessly into the holiday season with its Merchants Christmas Open House. On November 15th & 16th shops throughout the community deck their storefronts, extend warm welcomes, and offer specials to kick off Christmas shopping in festive style.

This annual tradition is more than a day of shopping; it is a celebration of Greenville’s identity as a community of small businesses, entrepreneurs, and neighbors who know that holiday magic begins with a personal touch. Strolling from store to store, you’ll be reminded that Greenville offers unique gifts that tell a story, service that feels personal, and hospitality that makes visitors feel right at home.

December Lights Up

The very next month, Greenville invites you to be part of a new tradition: Greenville – Festival of Lights on December 5. As dusk falls, families, friends, and visitors gather to witness the moment the city shines in holiday splendor. Across Greenville, twinkling lights glow, and at the heart of it all, the city’s towering Christmas tree comes to life in a spectacular lighting ceremony.

This event will blend music, festive treats, and the simple joy of coming together under the glow of the holiday season. Children will laugh as they sip hot cocoa, parents linger with neighbors, and visitors discover that Greenville knows how to celebrate with heart. It’s more than flipping a switch, it’s about illuminating the shared spirit of the community.

For those who love a cozy holiday film, Muhlenberg Community Theatre will offer something extra special. That same weekend, the theatre will host the premiere of A Christmas Wish, a new movie filmed right here in Western Kentucky. Selected as one of the few theaters in the region to show the film, MCTI will give audiences the chance to experience a story filled with the warmth and charm of the season, right in their own hometown.

Christmas Parade & Santa’s Village

No holiday season is complete without a parade, and Greenville delivers with its Christmas Parade on December 6th. Floats sparkle with lights, marching bands play seasonal favorites, and families line the streets in anticipation of a beloved tradition.

Adding even more wonder, a brand-new Santa’s Village will be unveiled; a whimsical surprise that will appear as if by magic overnight after the lighting ceremony on the 5th.

The parade captures what makes Greenville truly special: history, pride, and togetherness. For longtime residents, it is a reminder of cherished memories. For visitors, it’s an invitation to return year after year, discovering that Greenville’s small-town warmth has a way of making everyone feel like family.
