Read, Learn, & Connect at Warren County Public Library!

The public library system provides welcoming spaces, activity hubs where community members can find books to read to their hearts’ content, along with professional assistance and free resources galore. Providing third place options, WCPL locations also invite individuals and groups to gather with fellow readers, thinkers, and creatives to celebrate reading, learning, and doing activities all year long! While all our activities can be found at warrenpl.org/calendar, here are October’s highlights in the adult program arena:

Meet Authors Kristin O'Connell Tubb and Molly McCaffrey at WCPL October 13.

Celebrating reading!

Celebrating books and encouraging reading is one of the library’s historical hallmarks, and we are thrilled to welcome Tennessee author Kristin O’Donnell Tubb back to the Lisa Rice Library on Tuesday, October 13, at 6pm. Tubb, the author of eleven middle-grade novels, is making her YA debut with The Spiritualists, a novel that has garnered impressive accolades since its publication. While marketed as a book for teens, it’s one that pulls in the adult audience, as well. Dubbed “a high-stakes page-turner of a thriller” (and starred) by Kirkus reviews, this heist novel set in early 1900s New York City follows the story of a young psychic who meets a con artist looking for revenge. Its historical details, intrigue, and ghostly magic will engage and entertain readers from beginning to end. Tubb will be in conversation with local author Molly McCaffrey, and 100 copies of The Spiritualists will be given away at the event. Register through our online calendar of events.

Other opportunities to gather with fellow book lovers include a number of discussion groups that meet on a regular basis. Open to anyone and free to join at any time, you can determine which one fits your schedule and preferences best then jump right in! KIRB Appeal meets every other month at the Bob Kirby Branch and will meet this month on Monday, October 5, at 5pm to discuss Winter Garden by Kristin Hannah. The Great Books group meets monthly at the Lisa Rice Library to discuss shorter literary works on the second Wednesday of each month. The group will gather Wednesday, October 14, at noon to discuss “The Million-Year Picnic” from Ray Bradbury’s The Martian Chronicles. The DIVAS Book Club also meets monthly and will discuss The Housemaid by Freida McFadden on Monday, October 19, at 5pm at the Smiths Grove Branch. All book clubs and monthly reading selections are listed on the library’s calendar of events.

Celebrating learning!

Learn a new language or hone developing skills at Language Café at the Lisa Rice Library two Sundays a month. On October 11 and 25 at 3pm (and each second and fourth Sunday of the month through the year), the library will host a gathering where folks of any background can practice conversational skills. While Spanish and English are consistently available, additional languages are intermittently included, determined by interest and facilitator availability. Registration is not necessary.

Learn about Agatha Christie! Explore the fascinating facets of the life of Agatha Christie at this 5-part series that begins Monday, October 12, at 6pm at the Lisa Rice Library! Each free-standing program will be taught by Sandra Hazleton, an instructor with WKU’s Society of Lifelong Learners. Future sessions include October 19 & 26 and November 2 & 9. Register through the library’s calendar of events.

Learn how to mend at this month’s DIY Series! A textile mending workshop will take place Tuesday, October 27, from 6pm to 7:30pm at SOKY Center (in the brick building upstairs). Bring an item or use our scrap fabric to practice. Register through the library’s calendar of events.
