SOKY Locksmith... trusted, fast, local service.

We sat down with Timofey to discuss his journey, the role of technology in modern locksmithing, and how BG Locksmith continues to innovate while serving the community.

Katerina Rybina: Timofey, let’s start with your background. How did your early years set you on the path toward engineering and, eventually, locksmithing?

Timofey Arefkin: I was born in Chelyabinsk, Russia, and from a young age I was fascinated by technology. I joined a local radio engineering club as a teenager, where I learned hands-on skills and even won regional competitions. At the same time, I was competing in swimming and earned several championship titles. That balance of discipline and curiosity really shaped me. Later, I studied Electrical Engineering at Chelyabinsk Agroengineering University and eventually worked as a Lead Automation Engineer at Saint-Gobain ISOVER, where I designed modern automated systems.

Katerina Rybina: That’s a strong technical foundation. How did you make the leap to founding BG Locksmith in Bowling Green?

Timofey Arefkin: After moving to the U.S., I first gained practical locksmith experience in Boston. When my family relocated to Bowling Green, I worked as an automation engineer at Constellium. But I had the entrepreneurial itch. In 2018, I decided to start BG Locksmith. At first, it was just a small lockout service, but word spread quickly. We’ve since grown into a recognized brand across South Central Kentucky with more than 1,600 positive customer reviews.

Katerina Rybina: What sets BG Locksmith apart, especially in the automotive space?

Timofey Arefkin: The future of locksmithing is tied closely to automotive technology. Modern cars are essentially computers on wheels. That means a locksmith today has to be both a mechanic and an engineer. At BG Locksmith, we invested in dealer-level diagnostic and programming equipment early on. This allows us to do things like:

– Create and program car keys of any complexity.

– Repair and reprogram electronic control units (ECUs).

– Run advanced diagnostics on American, European, and Asian vehicles.

It’s complex work, but we thrive on solving those challenges.

Katerina Rybina: Beyond the technical side, you seem very focused on service and community impact. Can you tell us more about that?

Timofey Arefkin: Absolutely. For me, BG Locksmith isn’t just about fixing problems – it’s about helping people. Whether it’s a student locked out of a car, a family stuck in a parking lot, or a business that needs quick security solutions, we provide fast, reliable assistance.

We’re also looking ahead to accessibility. Right now, we’re developing a mobile app that will allow people in rural Kentucky and Tennessee to request advanced services – like key creation and module repair – without long delays. That’s going to make a big difference for people outside the city.

On a personal level, I try to stay active in the community, too. I’m part of a local cycling team, and I mentor youth in STEM areas. I believe in promoting both technical education and healthy lifestyles. My family and I are active members of Holy Apostles Orthodox Church here in Bowling Green. Faith and community values guide both my business and personal life.

Katerina Rybina: Professional standards in locksmithing can vary widely. How do you ensure quality at BG Locksmith?

Timofey Arefkin: We take professional development very seriously. I’m a member of ALOA (Associated Locksmiths of America) and SAVTA (Safe and Vault Technicians Association). My team and I go through training and certifications every year. That way, we stay ahead of the curve and can meet the highest technical standards.

Katerina Rybina: Looking back at your journey – from a young radio engineer in Russia to a business leader in Kentucky – what stands out most to you?

Timofey Arefkin: I’d say perseverance and innovation. Every stage of my life has taught me to keep learning and keep moving forward. BG Locksmith is proof that with the right combination of technical skill, business vision, and community spirit, you can create something that makes a real impact.

Conclusion

From youth competitions in electronics to founding a nationally recognized locksmith business, Timofey Arefkin’s story reflects the spirit of innovation and service. Through BG Locksmith, he has brought advanced automotive technology to South Central Kentucky while staying grounded in community values – a balance that makes his journey nationally significant in the locksmith and automotive service industry.
