It’s a horse’s world at Rainhill

I have been rescuing blind horses for 20 years. If you say it fast, it sounds like a long time, but it really isn’t. In that time, I have met many wonderful people who have stepped up in many ways to help Rainhill continue to give life- long homes to horses who were on their way to a horrible ending. Many of these supporters I have never met. They are names on paper and they live deep within my heart and soul. I tell them all the time, “I could not do this important work without you,” and I mean it!

So, it was a real treat today to get a visit from long-time supporter, Rita, her husband, Tom, and their adorable grandchildren, Tenley and Ian. Of course, the horses were excited, also, especially when they heard the bags of carrots being opened.

Rita and Tom sponsor Toby, a Thoroughbred gelding who has been at Rainhill for about five years. Toby and his half-sister, Trudy, were brought here when their owner passed away and the relatives had no interest in two old ex-racehorses. We were happy to make them part of the Rainhill family. They are two beautiful horses with perfect manners and are very attached to one another, especially since they have been together their entire lives. They have their own run-in shed and very large pasture where they can spend their days just being horses.

I find it very sad that so many horses do not have a soft place to land after their job in life is over. These are the ones that are sent “down the road,” wherever that may be. So, as I look out my window and see these once forgotten horses living their lives in peace, I think, “How lucky they are,” and, “How lucky I am that I can give them this wonderful gift of peace.”

Rainhill currently cares for 50 horses, 30 of which are blind, but all are beautiful, intelligent and deserving of a good life. If you have ever thought of helping one of Rainhill’s horses, we would love for you to be part of this inspiring journey to save horses from an unspeakable end. The sponsorship is $25 a month or a one-time donation of $300. Every dollar raised helps us do this important work. There are many horses that still need a sponsor. You can pick one or we’ll choose one for you.

Rainhill is a 501c3 non-profit and all money raised goes directly to the care of these amazing horses.

Thank you for reading our little stories.
